Spoofed Googlebot User Agent19 September 2011, 4:57 pm
Well, this visitor caught my eye earlier as the originating IP address is from the technology company Oracle but with a Googlebot user agent. Lean-but-mean StylistPick guns for the competition with new war chest3 February 2012, 12:29 pm
Bringing US business models to Europe might seem an obvious move for some - but it's frequently far harder than it might appear. US incumbents can indeed try to expand, but some fall at the first hurdle. Exactly this happened on January 20 when Shoedazzle announced its closure in the UK. UK head Nigel Whiteoak has since admitted to me that the company was looking to make more of the continued opportunity in the US, versus trying to expand in the UK. Shades of the Romans over-reaching their borde...

We covered the launch of Summly an application that summarises text last year, but I recently caught up with Nick D'Aloisio, the16 year year-old programmer who came up with the application for a video interview.
Its sounds almost boringly simple but the sheer amount of online content means the eco-system for these apps is rising. Formerly known as Trimit (which we covered back in July), Summly was developed by D'Aloisio from his bedroom in South London over a Summer break from school....

GeeknRolla rocks into the London Web Summit, March 1931 January 2012, 11:45 am
Way back in 2009 there was no large event dedicated to technology startups in the UK. TechCrunch, under Mike Arrington, was busy trying to get its TechCrunch50/Disrupt programme going in the US, and outside of local meetups, the TC event juggernaut still had yet to arrive in Europe. My friend and colleague Robin Wauters was doing Plugg in Brussels, but there wasn't a startup event in London. So I launched a personal project, an event I called GeeknRolla, the name for which I literally dreamt up ...

Today it launches in two new language, Brazilian Portuguese and Italian, adding to its existing English, German, French, Danish and Spanish translations. Spilt between San Francisco and Copenhagen offices, Podio is now in use in 170 ...

A quote from Brian Goetz19 August 2011, 12:20 pm
There is plenty of evidence in the ecosystem to support the hypothesis that, if given the tools to do so easily, object-oriented programmers are ready to embrace functional techniques (such as immutability) and work them into an object-oriented view of the world, and will write better, less error-prone code as a result. Simply put, we believe the best thing we can do for Java developers is to give them a gentle push towards a more functional style of programming. - Brian Goetz

How we use Redis at Bump16 July 2011, 4:37 pm
How we use Redis at Bump. A couple of neat tricks I hadn’t seen before: using Redis to aggregate log files from multiple servers (they all push in to a Redis queue, then one process pulls from the queue and writes to disk), and using Redis blocking queues for RPC by specifying a different temporary queue to return the result.

A quote from Dan Manges, Braintree30 June 2011, 9:27 pm
We can deploy new versions of our software, make database schema changes, or even rotate our primary database server, all without failing to respond to a single request. We can accomplish this because we gave ourselves the ability suspend our traffic, which gives us a window of a few seconds to make some changes before letting the requests through. To make this happen, we built a custom HTTP server and application dispatching infrastructure around Python’s Tornado and Redis. - Dan Manges, Brai...

Why Facebook open-sourced its datacenters9 April 2011, 7:54 am
Why Facebook open-sourced its datacenters. Jon Stokes speculates that Facebook plan to use open source hardware to compete with Google at datacenter efficiency . This isn’t a new pattern. Years ago when I worked at Yahoo! I was furiously jealous of the secret sauce technologies that allowed Google to build big applications faster than anyone else, such as BigTable and map/reduce. Today, the open source world has created better, free alternatives—sponsored in part by Facebook, Yahoo! and othe...

AT&T seeks to impose conditions on Dish LTE network, FCC to settle wireless squabble3 February 2012, 10:44 pm
You know the saying, second place is the first loser? Well, it looks like AT&T, which recently saw its attempt to absorb T-Mobile thwarted, is living up to that adage by petitioning the FCC to impose an "overly aggressive buildout" of Dish's planned mobile network. In a recent filing to the Commission, the satco countered this request for "LightSquared-like" requirements, defining its operation as a strictly retail endeavor, one that faces entirely different hurdles than that of its wholesal...

Some of you may have noticed that the Verizon version of the Galaxy Nexus is no longer listed as a supported, official developer device by Google. Despite rumors to the contrary, it doesn't appear this has anything to do with the kerfuffle over Wallet, but instead centers around technical issues relating to the APK files required for CDMA connectivity and the signing of those libraries. Other devices have also disappeared from the support pages, including the Nexus S 4G and the Verizon-branded ...

Do you wish you had your own personal Jetpack? Well, you may not have to wait much longer for ZTE's version -- the EuFi I890, announced at CES last month -- to come out, if its entry into the records of the FCC are any indication. It may not be the kind that you strap onto your back, but at least this one takes advantage of Verizon's LTE, and it happens to add in CDMA / EVDO and AT&T-compatible 3G radios. All PlayBooks go to heaven: Telus leak points to end-of-life status3 February 2012, 8:39 pm
This is the end, dear PlayBook-admiring friends. That is to say, it's the end-of-life for RIM's first unsuccessful stab at tablet computing. Unsurprisingly, the marketing blitzkrieg that saw J.Lo and the Flash Gordon theme awkwardly peddle the flailing tab hasn't done much to elevate sales or consumer interest, forcing its Canadian overlords to issue Telus an EOL notice. This not unexpected bit of news comes right on the heels of the BB maker's recently leaked device roadmap, in which a spring ...

Mayor essentials3 February 2012, 9:20 am
They could be just the thing for the north according to Michael Heseltine. And we should listen with respect to the man who gave us the regional offices of government. Sam Sims of the Institute of Government makes the mayoral case.Mayors offer big benefits for Leeds, Bradford and Wakefield, but the bigger prize on offer to the cities of West Yorkshire this year is serious devolution to a proper, city regional government. If the Yorkshire Post is to be believed then the people of Leeds, Bradford a...

A revolution for northern cities? – The debate over city mayors3 February 2012, 9:15 am

Well it's the date the government has set for a referendums on whether some of the country's largest cities want to see the establishment of Boris Johnson-style elected Mayors. Eurozone: UK ready to back IMF bailouts2 November 2011, 11:43 pm
Britain is standing by to give more money to the IMF so that it can, in turn, lend more money to Eurozone countries like Greece, Italy or Spain who are struggling to service their debts.
The government now believes, I'm told, that there are only three ways out of the current crisis - one they hope for, one they fear and a third they are ready to accept.
They are:
1. Eurozone leaders succeed in getting last week's deal back on track despite Greece's plan to use a referendum to secure a bett...

Happy anniversary11 May 2011, 12:40 pm

Who's saving the NHS from who?9 May 2011, 11:40 am
As you listen to Liberal Democrats declare that they are riding to the rescue of the NHS I can't help recalling a story I heard a while ago. It relates to Nick Clegg's reaction to attending a service at Westminster Abbey to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the NHS. As well as prayers and blessings the service on 2 July 2008 included a speech by Prime Minister Gordon Brown and the reverential playing of a sound recording of a speech by the founder of the NHS, Labour's Aneurin Bevan. Clegg compla...

Be careful what you wish for6 May 2011, 6:08 pm
To think that elections used to be boring. Predictable.
Just like the general election held exactly a year ago - today produced results no-one predicted with consequences which are totally unpredictable.
Many may have foreseen the drubbing Nick Clegg's Liberal Democrats would receive but few foresaw its scale - losing not just to Labour in the Northern cities, not just to the SNP in Scotland but - irony of ironies - to their coalition partners the Conservatives in parts of the South.
An...

Whither the Coalition now?6 May 2011, 9:09 am
It was inevitable after a night like that. Someone somewhere would call for Nick Clegg to resign. The defeated leader of Nottingham's Lib Dems, Gary Long, was the first to the microphone. If he got the backing of 74 local parties there would have to be a leadership contest. But where are they? And who support such an idea? And who would run against Clegg?
What is striking so far is that those councillors who lost in Sheffield and Liverpool and Hull gave their leader and the Coalition their bac...

Elections - the agony and the ecstasy6 May 2011, 7:16 am
Elections can bring relief, agony, joy and doubt.
David Cameron must scarcely be able to believe his luck this morning.
A year after failing to win the general election and having announced deep and painful spending cuts he will be deeply relieved that - so far at least - his party has barely received a scratch from the electorate. Losses may still follow but on nothing like the scale once feared.
The reason is clear - it's his coalition partner who has absorbed all the pain. Nick Clegg will...

Will Bin Laden's death hasten withdrawal from Afghanistan?3 May 2011, 12:15 pm
Further to my post yesterday I note the prime minister's words on the impact which the death of Bin Laden will have on the withdrawal of British troops from Afghanistan.
"It's clearly a helpful development I don't necessarily think it will change any timetables but we should use it as an opportunity to say to the Taliban now is the moment to separate yourself from Al Qaeda to give up violence"
More significantly he stressed the possibility of a political deal with the Taliban rather than a m...

Bin Laden's death2 May 2011, 10:28 am
America is rejoicing. George Bush promised Bin Laden - dead or alive. President Obama has delivered that promise and, crucially, before America marked the tenth anniversary of the 9/11 attacks.
Others are better placed than me to analyse what this means for Al-Qaeda and for events in the Arab world. The politics of this news, though, seem pretty clear.
Obama was elected to end the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. For many Americans the loss of life there was justified only as a response to th...

The rise of the Dinosaurs' Coalition18 May 2011, 9:45 pm
There is a new coalition emerging in British politics.
Fresh from their resounding success in defeating AV, many Conservative MPs have started talking to Labour backbenchers who also voted No in the referendum trying to form a new alliance to defeat the proposals to reform the House of Lords, announced by Nick Clegg yesterday.
The grouping are buoyed by their success on AV, and united by a strong element of hating Liberal Democrats.
Critics will no doubt call them the Dinosaurs' Coalition. ...

The Beast of Bolsover roars once more18 May 2011, 9:07 pm
An amazing salvo from Dennis Skinner at Prime Minister's Questions today. It was vintage Skinner, of a kind we've not seen for 10 years or more.
Many believe the Beast of Bolsover has mellowed in recent years, following his heart troubles and problems in his personal life.
But not today. Dressed in red shirt and red tie, he thundered:
"In recession-hit Britain, the billionaires have gone up by 20 - an increase of 37% - in this first year of Tory rule. Whilst in the real world, inflation's ...

Boundary changes boosting Labour membership18 May 2011, 8:21 pm
Ed Miliband often boasts of how tens of thousands of people have joined the Labour Party since the election - all evidence of his "new generation", he says.
I must admit I have always been rather sceptical about the figures, but perhaps they're true.
One Labour MP told me tonight that the prospect of serious battles with Westminster colleagues over the reduced number of seats, has prompted the more organised and far-sighted to embark on local membership drives to help their own selection.

Essex police confident of quick progress on Huhne18 May 2011, 6:56 pm
Cabinet minister Chris Huhne has contacted Essex Police offering to help them

his spokeswoman said tonight.
Earlier Essex police announced that they are starting to interview key individuals relating to the claims that Mr Huhne asked his then wife Vicky Pryce to accept penalty

That presumably also includes Mr Huhne's ex-wife Vicky Pryce, and maybe t...

Was Huhne restricted by M11 road works?18 May 2011, 4:57 pm
Some of the press speculation about Chris Huhne in recent days has focused on whether he was the victim of a 30 mile an hour speed restriction on the M11 which had been imposed because of road works.
On 15 February 2003 the Daily Telegraph reported that extensive road works would cause big delays on the motorway for the next two months - ie. covering the crucial date in the Huhne case, 12 March 2003.
In late February resurfacing work was due to start between junction 7 (Harlow), and junction 6...

Black September for MPs as boundaries scramble begins18 May 2011, 3:22 pm
Expect MPs to be very nervous this September. That's when the Boundary Commissions are going to make their provisional recommendations for the new, larger, Parliamentary constituencies.
The number of seats in the Commons is being cut from 650 to 600, and the size of seats being made more equal, which will require new boundaries to almost every constituency in Britain.
I have learnt that at a meeting a few days ago, representatives of the three main parties were told that the proposed new W...

HTML: The difference between attribute and property13 June 2011, 11:37 am

The .prop() function introduced in jQuery 1.6 raised a lot of questions about the difference and I hope this post will help you to understand it. What is an attribute? The .pushStack() method has been in jQuery since before version 1.0, but it hasn't received a whole lot of attention outside of core developers and plugin authors. Ferrari confident aggressive approach will yield results3 February 2012, 11:28 am

And after revolutionising the way they approach the design of their cars, the Italian team are certain the newly-launched F2012 is capable of returning them to their championship-winning heydays.

HP's Enyo framework is an essential ingredient for allowing new apps to work on webOS devices with different resolutions, but due to some sort of ethnocentric hiccup, v1.0 hasn't officially reached all international webOS phones and tablets. Fortunately, WebOS Internals has prepared a nice little Preware install package that anyone, anywhere can enjoy. At this point, adding Enyo will only provide access to a few extra apps, but at least the world will be reunited in its preparedness for a glist...

This is the end, dear PlayBook-admiring friends. That is to say, it's the end-of-life for RIM's first unsuccessful stab at tablet computing. Site Suddenly Not Saving Pages - Probably Nothing To Do With Etomite Itself :-(25 January 2012, 4:55 pm
Hi,
I don't think this has got anything to do with Etomite, but probably with the hosting environment (which is not my own in this case) but an Etomite site I help out someone with suddenly will not save any page changes. Has anyone experienced a similar thing before and if so, does anyone have any clues about a possible solution.

I'll ensure our schools have no excuses for failure | Michael Wilshaw2 February 2012, 7:36 pm
Last year's riots proved that the schools in our most deprived areas need leaders with drive and high expectationsThose who took part in the riots last August were overwhelmingly young and from disadvantaged backgrounds. Half of those who appeared in court were under 21, and three times more likely to be entitled to free meals when they were at school. The sad truth is that these are the very young people most likely to attend a weak school and receive a substandard education. This is not accepta...

Blanche Berryman obituary31 January 2012, 5:02 pm
Blanche Berryman, who has died aged 91, was an extraordinarily gifted teacher who made history into everyone's best-loved subject at our stuffy grammar school, Tiffin in Surrey, in the 1950s and 1960s. Never boring, never condescending, sometimes attractively risque, she was the only teacher who kept perfect order in her classroom purely by her inspiration and personality, without the heavy weaponry of detention – a pointless punishment she openly derided. A sharp dresser, she marched click-he...

Being brought up as an only child, alongside deprived and often abused "transient siblings", had a profound impact on Pat.This showed throughout the rest of her life, during which she remained a comm...

Letters: Happiness at the heart of the classroom23 January 2012, 9:00 pm
We were interested to read about the importance of children's happiness to their development and wellbeing (Whatever happened to happiness?, Education, 17 January). Our school was designed with children's contentment at its heart, for they learn best when they feel comfortable and safe. Good personal habits, including cleanliness and tidiness, are stressed. Inside, we have a colourful, stimulating and cheerful environment to excite very young children. Periods of work alternate with recreation. ...

The power of paper in a digital era | Robert McCrum2 February 2012, 11:33 am
As more and more archives are digitised, with many benefits, it's worth being reminded of the value of traditional recordsThis was supposed to be the paper-free generation. But what do we find? Sometimes, it seems as if we are like Shakespeare's schoolmaster Holofernes (in Love's Labours Lost) who is said, scornfully, to have eaten paper and "drunk ink". Wherever you look, you find paper eaters and ink drinkers. The other day I was in Cambridge to host a Wordfest (aka Cambridge Literary Festival)...

Edinburgh book festival chief wants authors, not celebrities1 February 2012, 10:19 am
Some literature festivals focus on stars first and books second, says Nick Barley, director of the Edinburgh international book festivalA book festival is about books, and should not be driven by stars and celebrities, Scotland's leading literary festival director has said. Nick Barley, the director of the Edinburgh international book festival, chided the Cheltenham and Hay festivals, saying they're too celebrity-driven, allowing people to appear that don't have new books out and paying large su...

The Costa short story prize is not enough31 January 2012, 4:02 pm
We are overdue a high-profile award for this neglected form, but we need more than a token, niche gong for a single storyThe news that the Costa prize is to give an award to the short story came suddenly, and unexpectedly. For those publishers that invest heavily in collections – the wondrous Salt, for example, or Bloomsbury, which has unilaterally declared 2012 the year of the short story – it looked like a godsend. Finally, a level playing field! A real opportunity to show the varied bread...

Save Our Libraries campaign: one year on31 January 2012, 11:07 am
Have you taken part in a save the library campaign? Tell us how it's goingIt's been a year since readers and authors organised Save Our Libraries Day. Across the UK, thousands of people disregarded the freezing temperatures and strong winds to show their support for their library and express anger towards proposed cuts to services. On the day, we live blogged the protests and with readers, created a map showing where all the library protests were taking place. Throughout the day people kept us up...

Oscars' big winners will be books27 January 2012, 2:06 pm
Literary adaptations look set to sweep the board in Hollywood this yearSix of the nine nominations announced this week for Best Picture are based on books, reflecting a recent pattern in which the Oscar lists have consistently and gratifyingly affirmed cinema's dependence on literature. Apart from a modest lurch towards originality in 2010, the previous five years saw line-ups in which half or more of the shortlistees were adaptations, including the winners No Country for Old Men (2008), Slumdog...

Scottish independence won't cut off British literature27 January 2012, 12:29 pm
English and Scottish literature have always been complicated hybrids, and separating the nations won't change thatJust before Alex Salmond gave the Hugo Young lecture, I received an email from the Scottish government announcing their plan to make it compulsory for every schoolchild doing "English" in Scotland to study at least one "Scottish text". Although Robert McCrum wrote, a propos of the lecture, that "if the politics of the United Kingdom become fragmented, then culture will surely follow"...

François Hollande's Shakespearean faux pas26 January 2012, 4:11 pm
The French presidential hopeful has been busy quoting Shakespeare. Question is: which Shakespeare?Had to post this in case anyone has yet to see it (in which case: you're welcome!). Attempting to sum up his anti-Sarkozy message in a speech to his party faithful yesterday, France's presidential frontrunner François Hollande decided to reach for Shakespeare to bolster his rhetoric. The bard, he told his supporters, put it best when he said "They failed because they did not start with a dream."Oh...
